Article in the Dún Laoghaire Gazette that the Council are going to put playing pitches and outdoor gym equipment at the old Pres Field site on Hudson Road. They are going to put the plans on show. Great that something is happening to the site.

Just reading the property section of the Sunday Times and there is a house for sale in Glenageary and the owner is reminiscing about her childhood when the area was farming land and when the dip in the road near Rathdown School flooded all the swans from around flew in and swam there. I'd read about the Swans Hollow here before but, this was a vivid recollection.....must have been a lovely sight.....Now and again we get a load of swans in flight passing here and the noise is amazing.

Here's what I was told by my Grandmother who was born in the area up the road in the Sally noggins as was her mother this would be back to around 1860's,Granny said a man who's surname was Swan lived on the Glenageary road upper and his property was in the hollow of the road this is how the area is called " Swans hollow" . I think this sounds as good as any other explanation I've heard. The Tithe Applotements Books 1823 -- 1837 have a Timothy Swan having property on the Glenageary Road in the parish of Monkstown in the year 1826 what do you think, I often saw the place flood but never was as lucky as the property seller to see any swans and if I was trying to sell my property the last thing I would talk about would be flooding.

The lie of the land and the way the land falls away towards Silchester makes it unlikely there was ever a pond or lake in the immediate area. Modern day flooding seems more a product of deficiencies in the way the Glasthule Stream was culverted. The "hollow in the road near the Swans house" is much more compelling.

Yes, I'm with Holla's theory on this. I do remember a lake with a small island from when I was very young, my uncles used to go duck shooting to it in Winter, but it was more Dalkey direction, up somewhere around Ulverton House or thereabouts, there was also a large volume of water up around present day Killiney Heights, where the reservoir is now, that I think might have been a quarry pit. There was also a quarry workings at Rochestown Park, it used to flood almost every Winter until they did proper draining on it.

Glasthule looking good this morning in the sunshine. Very positive air about the place. Grand bit of fish from Gerry in Cavistons. He is always in good form. The years I have annoyed him getting chickens boned and looking for this and that and he is old fashioned politeness itself

Spent a half an hour chatting to a lady about Glasthule today. She recognized my Irish accent and wanted to know what part of Dublin I hails from. When I told he,r she began to relate childhood holidays in Blackrock, Glastule, Sanycove and Bray. She even knew a cousin by marriage. Funny the people you meet when you drop in to a stationers shop in . . . . London.

Got this on F/B today. It was only on Saturday that I noticed a defibrillator in Dalkey. This family are raising funds for one in Glasthule. Such a sad story,

On Sunday April 30th (May bank holiday weekend) we will hold a fun filled day of events in Glasthule to raise money for a much need defibrillator in Glasthule village to honor my father's memory.

Larry Costello lived in Glasthule for over 30 years. He was well known in the area far and wide. Anyone who knew my dad knew he was the life and soul of the party. A gentleman. He always made time for everyone and helped out when he could.

He died suddenly on the 29th of October 2016. Our world fell apart that day. He suffered a cardiac arrest. While calling the emergency services they asked had we got access to a defibrillator. There is none available in Glasthule.

In his memory we wish to raise enough funds to purchase a defibrillator for Glasthule village and help save a life.

On the day there will be a sponsored walk, sponsored swim, football match, prizes and music on in the local pub The Eagle House.
