I was looking for a photo of the outside of the Top Hat as well. I am almost certain I saw a photo of the interior somewhere on this site.

Hard to believe there is not a good one of the outside somewhere around.

You got me looking for info. on the Top Hat now.

Found something I had totally forgotten about.

An RTE program called "Like Now" that was filmed in the Top Hat each week. It was presented by Danny Hughes (wonder where he is now?)

I did not know Ozzy Osbourne played there. Can remember Chips (and Linda Martin doing solo song) but cannot remember other showbands I saw there.

When you went in the door the ticket office was on the LHS and the coats were handed in on the RHS. The stairs went down to the left and right and there was a balcony straight in front of you. Downstairs was the bar and you could get chicken. All this is from memory and I may be wrong. When you came out of the Purty and went up the hill there was a fire door almost immediately on your RHS. There were bouncers there to stop you getting in. Remember all the cars up as far as Bradfords post office and beyond. It was a big event on a Saturday night. Think they did Bingo and a skate park there as well.

I see the Top Hat was buit in 1953 and wondered if anybody remembers it being built? or knows what was on the site before it?

As a young teen, I was involved with Monkstown Community Centre and we used to run these gigs in the Top Hat on Sunday afternoons every few months or so. The "socials" were aimed at all ages and were well-attended. Various artists were put on - singers, bands and a disco.

At the time, there was a very distinguished singer called Charlie Byrne - a baritone I think - ( "Ol Man River" & that type of repetoire). He would have been a contemporary of Albert Healy, Peggy Dell, Noel Purcell etc. And he was a very striking character with a shaven head like Kojak. We got him to sing at the gig and this was a big deal at the time for the older patrons.

Anyway, Charlie was proceeding through his act and suddenly all hell broke loose. He stormed off the stage and no one saw his heels for dust.

It turned out that the 'messers' had taken their position in the balcony that wrapped around the whole room and they were strategically located just over the stage. SPLAT - one of them landed a big gob down on the unfortunate Charlie - landing on his head.

It was a disgraceful thing to happen but I can never listen to Old Man River without chuckling about that memorable afternoon in the Top Hat.

I knew Charlie fairly well when I was knee high to a shirt button, I had the pleasure of working with his son for many years and are still friends though we've both retired, he is the image of his Dad !!
Do you or anyone else remember being in the Hat when Adam Faith performed ? well he had a storm off as well, somebody in the crowd was less than impressed and threw a penny which smacked poor Adam in the gob, it was reported he had a tooth broken !!

Micháel
I remember Charlie Byrne -
He worked for Gael Linn for a while drumming up customers for their draw-
he would give a quick version of "OLD Man River"at the front door -if you signed up -a lovely man-

I remember that night Keeper, when Adam Faith was on in The Hat.
Nobody cared that he stormed off after being hit with the coin
nearly everyone said he was Kat anyway.
heard about it the next day -I think it was mentioned in the Sunday papers.
sent from my PC and typed on a keyboard (old fashioned black colour) using three fingers

That's the same Charlie Byrne that used to be on "Living With Lynch" Sunday lunchtimes on Radio Eireann. His catchphrase, if I recall, was "I heard it before, Joe, I heard it before". Not sure, but did he not also appear on a tv programme called "A Noble Call"?

Google images, type Top Hat Dun Laoghaire. Loads of band listings but not a single photo of it.
Amazing the amount of unrelated images there from this site though. :D

I have tried all the showband web sites and none have photos of the Top hat i have a menu card on Harjos photos but no photos .
As one who spent most of his growing up in the Top hat and been barred for "lurching" with a certin girl from the Farm also for jiving before the big band came on 9 remember when Norman Williams and the resident band were playing it was strict tempo until the showband came in the second half of the dance .
Top Hat was so strict when it opened first ballroom dancing only when the showbands became popluar in the late 1950s Mr Di Fleice had to change and he then allowed showbandsto play from the early 1960s.
When Di Fleice sold to Matt Byrnes in the late 1960s he changed the style and tbrought in T J Byrne to manage Jim Farley and the Top Hatters which lasted for a while until Jim Farley deceided to take that band on the road thats when I became involved with driving them and then ran bus services from there to Bray and the city.
The only footage of the Top Hat is in the Royal Showbands flim the one nighters I was there when they filmed it and there are a few clips outside and inside .

HARJOE, Young Alan De Felice passed away a few years ago and he lived in Mulgarve St where he and his wife run a B&B ...I last seen Allan at Peter Mooney's funeral in Kilmore Qy in October 1997...Peter retired there after he retired from Thames Valley Police... I understand that Alan died unexpectedly in Cyprus...I knew him quite well in the early days up to 1967....Maybe there is a thread with the Mulgrave St connection ???

Navanman,

I'm going to sound like a teacher but, could you also post this pic in some Glasthule topic as it will get lost in here and no one would think of looking for it under Top Hat.

I used to hear stories about the Caroline but was never in there scry scry

Thanks NM, it looks so lonely and forlorn. Caroline was so short lived, but great. I had been going there when it was The Astoria and we went as a school to the Saturday morning "folly ups". I remember one night when The Pretty Things were top of the bill and the drummer collapsed. Probably pissed or drugged. The drummer from The Strangers took over for him. Peter Adler's band were regular as well.
When Caroline closed I think the next best venue was Salthill Tennis Club. Good memories
