Restoring old photos

Postby Gulliver » Sat Jun 30, 2012 1:24 pm

On Tue July 10th at 8.00pm the Genealogical Society's monthly lecture will be on:-

"The Care and Restoration of Old Family Photographs"
by Edmund Ross

Location:- Dun Laoghaire College of Further Education, Cumberland St.
Donation €3 to cover costs

I have personal experience of work done by the Edmund Ross studios in Grafton St on a very badly damaged photo, and the results were nothing short of spectacular.

Thanks for that info Gulliver (love your new avatar)

Ross studios must be around for ever. I was taken there on my communion day for photos and then to Bewleys for cakes- but for some reason not my confirmation- no record of that.We must have fallen on hard times between the two events!!

Grammer,

We might be going to you for the restoration - that is a lovely job you did on your grandparent's photograph. Very distinguished couple.
I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.

Fantastic pics Grammer,

I read somewhere that the guy that did these, not only coloured them so expertly, he also did some extraordinary research into dyes used in fabrics of the period so the colours used are exactly what they were like back in the day.

That reminds me

Can anyone point me to any authoritative source of advice on (physically) cleaning old print?
i.e. Removing stains and grunge prior to digitising.

Try the photographers in Monkstown Farm, I am sure they will be able
to help you. They are up near the statue.

You need Photoshop, shock horror Michael. It's done with Layers. Many many youtube tutorial videos on how to. ;)
