Contrary to popular belief, embassies are not considered to be foreign territory, i.e. territory of the ambassador's country. But, in general, Irish law does not apply there. This is because the Vienna Convention offers diplomatic immunity to diplomats and, in general, to others in the embassy (non-diplomats, refugees, visitors) who are there with the permission of the ambassador. The Vienna Convention also provides that the host country should provide a level of protection using its security forces if necessary. Diplomatic residences enjoy similar rights

In his home town of Athlone they had less respect for his memory. His original family home and birthplace at The Bawn, just off the main street has for many years operated as a chinese takeaway called "Count John's" with very garish signage.

OMSG ! or Oh Monosodium glutamate, what next.

We really do not cherish our heros. I havent been round to his grave lately bit the green from the head image was staining the headstone. I always give it a little nod in passing.

He was an amazing singer.
