The Longest Day

Postby jordo » Mon Jun 21, 2010 8:55 pm

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but we are on our way back because today is the longest day. The sun rose at 04:56 and will set at 21:57 giving a massive 17h 1m 26 secs of sunlight. By tomorrow the length of day will reduce by 3 secs. And within a week it will have reduced by 40 secs.

I have watched the sun rise on this day many times and from different vantage points along the East coast. My furthest south was Greystones and the furthest north was Clogher Head, today I was on Howth Head and I took this series of photos at one minute intervals until the Sun had cleared the horizon but at that point the top part was being hidden by a band of clouds.

The Summer Solstice took place over Dublin at 12:29 when the Sun reached its highest point in the sky.

Sandstone cliffs on the left cast long shadows over a bleak and forbidding landscape channelling the weary traveller, through the valley created by similar cliffs on the right, ever onwards towards his goal of greener pastures further North

Or a low level shot of a very shallow trench caused by rain water making its way out to sea on Dollymount this morning.

Thanks Guys, I got the idea from a photo you posted Farmboy looking up towards Marine Road from the hospital that Strum asked did you take it at ground level.

Manys the time I was nearly at ground level in the town Jordo, usually from the effects of the demon drink! :) Oh and Strum, beautiful sunset you captured from the Noggin, nice one. 8-)

A panoramic view of Dublin Bay at 20 degree intervals starting at the Réal na Mara monument at the bottom of the North Bull Wall this morning and back again. God, it is a great little country when the sun shines.
