I had a book and there was also a story about an Italian named Decco who lived there with his dancing Bear. Did that not come up before in the "Bear" Topic?
old story/myth about the cave is that a man lived there with a trained bear.

Kind of unlikely as it's such a small gap. :D

There must be going to be a shortage of cars or a huge new popularity for cycling...

At Killiney Station there were two long strips of metal hoops for attaching bicycles in the car park opposite the station.. Then a few years ago they put up about four more loops on the left side of the station building. Another group of bicycle hoops was put near the bottle bank opposite the station and the other day they took one of the parking places from outside the station and put up about four more hoops. Funny thing is that in all the times I have been to the station not one bicycle has been parked at any of these nor anywhere else near the station...what right minded gobs would leave a bike there !! who makes the decisions in the Council...do they get money for bike schemes and is someone taking the pi$$ as grammer would say ????? the mind boggles....

Have to say Rocker a lot of People have to travel by Bike to get to the station to commute on the dart to work and back. Their day is messed up being distracted by the thought that their Bike might be robbed while they're there. You just couldn't get a handy spot to park could you? johndllle

There is never a bike parked at the station. It is too isolated a place and now that the station is unmanned it is a mecca for messers and worse. The lady in the coffee shop must be persecuted.

I posted that photo today because I had been looking into something about where the train diverted away from the coast between Killinay and Shankill, and I spotted this photo when it was a single line and now I have the photos that connect the dots.

This is the original line embankment today behind Bayview/Seafield now a walkway as far as Shanganagh cliffs and crosses the Shanganagh River at the coast.

Image

This is when the embankment was the rail line. (curious tents) I see there was a wooden bridge over the Shanganagh river here and the side of the original railway bridge beach side.

Image

Another. (more curious tents) and look how few stones on the beach at that time. Also the only photo I've seen I think before the Martello Tower was built on.

The original bridge today, Bayview side.

So I'm guessing the diversion took place right behind the Martello Tower here. (red line)
Whatcha reckon folks? :D

Great research there Strum. Never saw that old photo before. I'll have to blow it up to look better. My friend's father used to live in a tent near Killiney I'd say where the sewage plant is now, for the summer and go to work every day on the train and go home to the wife and children at weekends...about 70 years ago...it took all sorts!!

That's where those tents are Rocker, beside the sewage plant. If that photo is around 70 years old can you imagine that one of those tent's was maybe your friend's father's? :D

Great photos Strum ! Used to fish for eels and flounder at that bridge and at the mouth of the river for a stray Dargle salmon  not to mention some nice sea trout, ah, those were the days scry There were just two rusted girders spanning the bridge, we thought we were circus performers when we walked across them, are they still there ? Methinks I'll have to pay a visit just for old times sake. Thanks for posting, photos always arouse great memories.

So you're saying the sewage plant was located there because of the tents? Sounds logical :D
