Looking for the descendants of Martin & Alexandrina Delaney

Postby OKRyan14 » Sat Oct 08, 2011 3:50 pm

Hi,

I am researching the Scanlans of Garraunboy, Killaloe, Co. Clare. Alexandrine/a Delaney(née Lee, Killaloe, Co. Clare, in 1888) was the great-granddaughter of Margaret Scanlan & John Hare.
Margaret Scanlan came from Hill House, Garraunboy and was the sister of Patrick Scanlan, my great, great-grandfather.
If the names Martin and Alexandrine/a Delaney sound familiar to anyone/ring a bell I would be very grateful for any info. that you could provide.

Thanks.

Hi there
good luck in your search
unless your relations came from Dun Laoghaire its back to google :D :D :D
you should try some of the specialist sites
roots chat .com -etc - LDS is another site that might be of help
but you do need dates to make any head headway.

Here are the marriage records of Alexandrina Lee and Martin Delaney who were married in the Registration District of Rathdown in 1919. What areas is Rathdown comprised of?
MARRIAGE:Name: Alexandrina Lee Registration district: Rathdown Record type: MARRIAGES Registration date - quarter and year: Apr - Jun 1919 Estimated birth year: Age: Mother`s surnames: Film number: 101264 Volume: 2 Page: 867 Digital GS number: 4199366 Image number: 00211 Collection: Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958.

MARRIAGE:Name: Martin Augustine Delaney Registration District: Rathdown Event Type: MARRIAGES Registration Quarter and Year: Apr - Jun 1919 Estimated Birth Year: Age (at Death): Mother`s Maiden Name: Film Number: 101264 Volume Number: 2 Page Number: 867 Digital Folder Number: 4199366 Image Number: 00200 Collection: Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958

My grandmother stated in a family history account that she wrote in 1957 that Lexie Lee was married and living in Dun Laoghaire, so that along with the marriage records establishes a Dublin connection at least!
Re. dates, the only dates I have are Lexie's year of birth)(1888) and her year of marriage(1919)

Would greatly appreciate any help.

Hello OK Ryan, The district of Rathdown is basically South East Co. Dublin and roughly covers the existing area of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County.

The main information from the above Marriage listing, which I presume you gained from FamilySearch.org? will help you obtain a copy of the marriage registration. The below information in bold can be handed into the General Register Office (GRO), which is located in the Irish Life Centre in Dublin city and the clerk there will give you a copy of the marriage registration for a fee of €4.

The information you need is: that it is a Marriage search, in the Rathdown District, in the 2nd Quarter (Apr-Jun) of the year 1919, Volume number 2, Page number 867.
The important thing that you will learn from gaining this copy; is that you will most likely find out the addresses of both Alexandrina and Martin, their ages or at least that they are over 21 and both their Father’s names. You will also learn which church they were married in and further searches could also lead to other family members being married there or if the family had been living in that area for a long time, baptismal records.

I don’t know if the GRO have a facility to do this online, maybe other members will know? just in case you live outside Ireland.

It can be a great eye-opener and lead to the locations you need.

Best of luck, Jay

I believe OKRyan14's request was to do with identifying the decendants of those named. By which I'm supposing those currently living or at least those who existed in the living memories of our subscribers. Its just possible that one of our subscribers or readers might know something of the families involved.

Apart from, perhaps, Applications for Childrens Allowance and School Admissions (both closed), I'm not aware of any records that greatly assist in tracing an older generation to a youngerone. Genealogists, like rowers, tend to work best going backwards; though who knows, in the future ("going forward"?) new sources might become available.

The simplest approach might be to consult a current phone directory or electoral roll for a suspected area and begin a long process of elimination.

Anyone know any different?

Ah, a pessimist in the room. There are literally thousands of “possible & maybe” in every part of this little island and more of them who emigrated. As for phone and electoral directories, good luck with that if you have the time.

Apparently, like rowers, genealogists sometimes work backwards; absolutely brilliant!!! but like rowers the main objective is to push forward and get results. OK Ryan is looking for any help in tracing the descendants of Alexandrina Lee and Martin Delaney. Using the marriage information supplied in the last posting, this will be best facilitated with the establishment of where they were living at the time of their marriage, as one of them may not have been living in the Rathdown district and could shed light on another area. At the very least it may help when looking through phone books...

From my experience OK, I believe this will assist you greatly and will bring you a step closer to possibly finding if there are any descendants still in these areas.

Are you in a position to get to the GRO or any of the other similar offices in Ireland?

Jay

OKRyan14,

It seems your Alexandrina Lee was living in Co. Clare in 1901 too - this time with her parents - also in Killaloe. . .
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000484993/

Most likely to have got married there too.

Marriage Cert would still be useful if only to discover Husbands occupation - it might point to likely a future residence thats relatively static esp if teacher, farmer etc. But God help the researcher if occupation is military or suchlike. "Descendants" could end up anywhere in Ireland or the Empire.

The fact that family sources suggest Dun Laoghaire is encouraging though - checking out all the Delaneys about greater Dun Laoghaire area might not be that daunting. Toms Street Directory is an option as would Dublin Newspapers for birth/death notices or other articles

UPDATE!
Alexandrina, Martin & Elizabeth Mary Delaney were living at 21 Belgrave Square, Monkstown in the 1940s.
Information from electoral registers, courtesy of Adam Byrne, Local History Librarian, Dún Laoghaire Library.

So now that I've been able to pinpoint the Delaney family in the Dún Laoghaire area I'm hoping that somebody might be able to tell me a bit more about them.

Thanks.

Gulliver,

You are some man for the records. I am facinated by this even though I don't know anyone from Clare.
