This damaged photo is of high babies in the Dominican Convent in and around 1934. My Mam is the little girl with the black curly hair in the third row back and number nine counting from the left. She is Maureen O'Toole from Clarence Street, later Cross Avenue. Maybe, some of you can spot your mothers or grandmothers.

Just seen this Photo now, I wonder would my Mam be in it ? she was born in 1928, so she would have been 6 then, is that old for high babies ? if not her maybe one of her sisters. They were Byrne's From Cumberland St.

The Dominican Convent took in children from about the age of 3 1/2 for Low Babies
particularly if the family was a large one. A creche before they became fashionable!
The nuns also alowed young children sit at the back of the class of an older sister so
the mother only had one collection to do or the older sibling would take the younger
ones home.

Look at the face of the girl in the middle of the back row.

Now there is a nun in the making if ever I saw one.

And the cheeky grin of the girl in the second row.

Have to say I was never that fond of Father Moroney!

She has just spotted a very large Seagull who has had a very large feed on the West Pier and who is an expert dive bomber when releasing his number twos,

As an alterboy we did not like him either. He was a grumpy ould get.

Was it not him that would stop if you were late for mass and wait until you were seated before continueing.

But from memory was he also not the priest that could say mass in 10 - 15mins.

Fr. Martin was lovely.

Lookin' at the posture of the padre, I don't think he was particularly fond of you either, Rocker. Or of any of the girls.

Yes Navanman, you are correct about Fr. Moroney on both counts, Fr. Martin was a good man, great to go to confession to him, he was nearly always asleep in the box, remember having to knock on the grill to remind him I was still there more than once :D he always had a bigger crowd to hear than the others, although I also remember being caught out one night when me and my buddies went to him and there was a " missionary" hearing confession who was obviously trained by the Gestapo Interrogation Unit, the crowd dispersed rapidly to Msg Boylan and Fr Delaney :!: :!: :!: off topic ! Sorry !!

Not sure Johndle, Sputnik may know who they are, both my sister and Sputnik's are in the photo, they were very good friends back then and still are to this day. I would love to see any other photo's of Girls Communions from The Dominican but they seem to be few and far between. :?

Keeper, looks like that seagull hit the priest right in the neck, he has a white ring all around it.

You were probably looking at the Dominican Convent thread in the schools section. The photo was from about 1934.

If you look at the top right hand side of the Portal page there is a Search box. You can search for anything on the site there. It will bring up possible threads and then you can go through them.
