Cross ave 50s 60s 70s

Hi all
I was raised in wolftone ave in the 60s 70s my mother s familey was from cross ave all their lives until we moved in the earlel 70s
I remember well the Docker Farral paddys and hoppy noels across the road paddy was truley a Gent always had time for everybody
I heard someone mention the wards they were from tevolie terrice their dad did die at an early age in his 40s the boys were Arther Paul
AND gerard and a sister too I cant think of her name does anybody recall the coffeys a happy band of lads from the backs
Fran eric sean and steven they were great crack and what about Louthie from 1 mill street or the Gormans Henry and Co
Also the watsons the o malleys the offers the hammonds iwent to the convent school my first teacher was sister john then mrs clark
After that iwent to the CBS thats when Life really began ha ha

Hi Midfielder. I hung around with another Ward, same family, he was/is Phillip. I remember Fran Coffey well too, and the other names you mentioned.
I also worked with and hung about with Paddy Farrell's son Mark.

Hi Midfielder, welcome to the site. Lots of the girls I went to school with were from 'The Backs', your post brings back many names. Wolfe Tone Avenue - the O'Donnells, Whites, Heffernans, Desmond Avenue - McDonald, Walker, Coffey, Osbourne. Tivoli Terrace East - Reynolds, Cahill, Brandon, Lawlor, Smith, Glendon. These are the names which come to mind and all because of your post!

Hi Midfielder I spent a lot of my time on Cross Avenue swapping comics with lads like Mick Mooney next door to Farrells a couple of doors away was Richard Cummins and Jimmy Coffey, and around the backs our own Denis Cromie also around there on Domnick Street were the Ryans( Eddie & June) , Kellys(Paul ), Reddans ( Henry Nicky),Mooneys ,Rooneys( Ann & Mattie ) Murphys , on Desmond Avenue were Browns , Connellys,( Joe & Sunny) Mc Donalds ( Tony, Sadie, Janet)Browns , Walker ( Peggy, Ester) Coyles (Ann) Costellos ( Tommy ),
on Wolfe Tone along with the families already mentioned were the Carrols ( Pat ,Maureen,Sean)
Of course on Tivoli Terrace were the Courneys shop with Joe ,Mary and the other sisters the Brandons all red heads Glendons , Logans( Eugene , Oliver)Crimmons ( Tony),Dodds (Tony & Maurice Rip my cousins).
Its amazing what memories just one post can invoke one little trigger to the past and much happer times when we had nothing and wanted nothing.

I used to hang around with Tommy Doyle of Wolfe Tone Avenue. We were in the Brothers together.
And, who remembers 'Hatchet'? I was working in Kellys of Patrick Street at the time and used to walk past them filming it every day.
I used to walk to work with Marie Kane (RIP) from Smyths Villas. She worked in Parle & Hickey on Patrick Street making Sudocrem. At the time there were only six workers in the factory (the names Maureen Watson and Ruby Griffin come to mind). Last week I noticed you can still buy their Sudocrem even here in Australia, but I think it's now made in Tallaght.

I remember Hatchet it was a T V type movie and they made it down the backers of Cross Avenue and I think some scenes were shot in Glasthule Buildings because they were like to the flats on Corporation Place in Dublin, would have been early days of R T E 1963/64

I remember Hatchet but surely it was later than that Harjoe, because 63/64 I was only 4 or 5 yrs old???

I worked in Kelly's (with Snowhites brother) from August 1973 to August 1974, so Hatchet was filmed in that period.

Hi all, I've recently bought a house on Cross Avenue and am wondering if anyone knows when they were built? Found some info on the council site which suggests the cottages were there as far back as 1860. Just thought someone here might know

Welcome to the site. I wish you every happiness in your new home in Cross Avenue. I am sure there will be someone on here who might have details of when the houses were built.

I never think of asking the Council what sort of records they have. There should be old rates books which would show the owners ! Just a thought.

Had a look at the OSI maps and Cross Ave is on the 25inch . This is dated 1888-1913

A lot of the houses in Dún Laoghaire were part of the De Vesey/Longford Estate. If you have time in the winter this makes great reading if only to follow the history of ~Estates in Ireland. Cross Avenue could have been part of this!
