The reed boat with the tower is primarily for transporting tourists across the lake for a small fee. The long reed boat is used by locals to transport goods and reeds between islands. Most of the people on these islands are quite poor and derive most of their hard cash from tourism. They are small in stature 5ft 4ins or so and they are very strong, the porters and local ladies carry huge loads on their backs, up some very steep inclines and in rarified air. The Llamas, Alpacas and Vicunas are all over the place, Llamas primarily used as pack animals, Alpacas seem to be used mostly for their wool and to eat and Vicunas are a protected animal prized for their particularly fine wool. Saw a ladies coat made from Vicuna wool and it cost €7000 as opposed to one made from baby Alpaca wool which cost about €250.
As is usual in most third world countries this is not a matriarchal society, the women do all the heavy work. They carry water from wells, tend the crops in the fields, cook, clean and look after the children. They also run the stalls in the market, the men sit around and don't seem to do much, however as all the lads on this site know the wife is the real boss. I have more photos to post as I work my way to Macchu Picchu, glad you are enjoying them. :D

Those photos are a pleasure to look at and as Rocker says, its great that they were taken by one of our own. Now I dont want to sound disresptful to the womenfolk in the pics but if I was stuck on an island with thousands of such women....................I,d still be a bachelor!!!! :D

Couldn't agree with you more Farmboy. Spudseamus, I was in Alaska 11 years ago and it was one of the best places I have ever visited, have always wanted to return and I can honestly say the ladies there were very attractive. Hope you are enjoying those pints in Walter's, you are certainly making good use of the free Wi Fi.

Some more photos from Lake Titicaca, these are from Taquile Island, this is an island where only the men knit. It is a UNESCO World heritage site and the knitted products are considered to be some of the finest in the world.

On our way to Taquile with one of the islanders hitching a lift.

This is for Rocker, a jumping Alpaca.

Holla, just to answer your question the only one that put their hand out for some money was the very old guy doing the knitting. Generally the contribution is one Sol about 30 cents. Some people do ask but generally they don't, if you see a colourful lady with a Llama in tow, then you are probably going to be asked to pay.

Some of your photos are not showing up for some reason. Is it just me or is there a problem with Imageshack???
You should make a slideshow and put it on Youtube.
:)

Hi Dancer,

When I began to post these photos I used the wrong link and the photos were "upsetting" the site. Strum advised me of this and I now have the correct links. So you may see forbidden on some pics, now you know why. :D Thanks for the kind comments on the photos, had I known you wanted an Alpaca, I could have brought you one back.

Some photos from Cuzco, this is the capital of the Inca Empire. The Incas believed that it was the navel of the world and all life came from here.
