Bluetit Webcam Monkstown - 2012 edition

Postby Gulliver » Thu Feb 16, 2012 5:28 pm

Last years edition of Bluetit Webcam Monkstown was a tale of romance, intrigue, deceit and betrayal, birth, growth, slaughter, and the Darwinian survival of only the fittest. It gripped the nation (well, a little corner of it) week after week. If you didn't see it you can just search this site for "a sad tale".

This year, I have a new birdbox from Aldi and a better camera. I have modified the birdbox to add two windows using a honeycomb plastic which traps infra-red. These windows will allow extra light and therefore hopefully give a better picture. The camera also has night vision so we can see what they get up to after dark.

I have always found that a little perch just below the entrance helps them, so I have added one - but some people see danger in that - danger from predators including cats

From now on, we are depending on the bluetits to choose our box, and we have seen them looking in. It is too early for them to start building - we hope this will happen in late March or early April. Keeping the fingers and toes crossed........

Gulliver,

I've read the "sad tale"postings and am looking forward to this year's success. Am an avid fan of Derek Mooney and Mooney Goes Wild. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to witness nature first hand.

Mine is similar (not identical) to this one - similar price. These kits provide all that is necessary for watching on a standard TV. To watch on a PC or to stream, you need additional software and a connector which links a USB to video. An example is the EasyCap USB Video Capture Adapter which retails from the manufacturer at GBP17, but can be bought much cheaper on ebay. I have a few such connectors, so I did not have to buy a new one

A bird (unidentified) has established a nest in a bush just about a metre from my Bluetit nest box. Built a nest very quickly and almost unnoticed, and is sitting on it. Cannot get a good view or a camera shot. Hope it is not terratorial and does not frighten away potential occupants of the nest box.

Bird has been identified as a blackbird. The male (with yellow beak) is regularly around to keep predators away, particularly is the hen leaves the nest.

I have been assured that this will not upset any bluetits who want to make a home in my nestbox

That's good news Gulliver, the Blackbirds around my garden have a full time job on their hands (wings maybe !) with the Magpies, those pesky Magpies are so organised, one drew the male away from the nest, another drew the female off the nest, and a third Magpie went in to investigate and thats when I moved in to scare him away, I'm sure the Blackbirds will leave now. She hadn't laid any eggs yet so I'm hoping they'll stay.

Stuck mobile phone into the bush today "20th Mar" and got this pic
Not perfect, but clearly shows a family of 4 or 5 baby blackbirds.

Dancer
Have you heard a version of "Bye Bye Blackbird" like this one from Melody Gardot..... raises your spirits... and more...

Certainly not the version your uncle sang

Last year (2011), our bluetit familty began to move in on 4th April, and sometimes they are a bit later... So I am still very hopeful :D :D :D
Not yet considering putting it on daft.ie at a reduced rent.
How much is the household charge for a bluetit house?????

The blackbirds have completed their visit and moved out with their young (I assume - although I did not see them leave) and the nest is empty.

Abject failure this year - no takers - maybe rent too high - could not afford household charge

Ah  sorry to hear that, I blame Phil the Enforcer  there again, you can't even bring the rent down, even if you wanted to, because of upward only reviews, still, look on the bright side, didn't you have the Blackbirds :D :D now the camera is free for your Easter Egg detective work, :? take care.
