Make a Webpage

Postby Strum » Tue Feb 16, 2016 9:49 pm

Zirco prompted me to make this and it's a bit of fun, it'll also help you understand how "tags" work in messaging. I first did this on windows 98 many moons ago and I was hooked.
Firstly HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the most basic code across all web-pages although over the years it has been improvised to CSS, PHPBB and many other codes but forget about them for now.

Here's the quote tag in messaging for example. Note I have put in a space after the e's before the bracket ] on the closing quote which breaks the code so I can show you...

[quote ] [/quote ]

...otherwise you'll get this...

type anything between the closed quote tags

It sounds complicated but it's not really.
People tend to leave out the closing bracket ] in replies, and a simple missing part of a tag can mess up an entire web page until it's corrected. Ok that's the boring bit, now for your first web page.
Note the only difference between the site code here in messages and HTML is the use of < > instead of [ ]

Make a new folder so you can keep all pages etc in the same place. Open notepad and copy / paste the following text below into it and save the file to the new folder, it'll save as whateveryoulike.txt Keep notepad open and now go to "save as" and name it the same but save it as whateveryoulike.html

<html>
<head>
<title>My First Web Page</title>
</head>
<body> Hello. </body>
</html>

Go to your folder and you'll find both files. One .txt and the other .html Open the html file (you'll see it's a web page anyway) You have just created your first web page.
To edit your web page go back to the txt file and type anything you like between the < body> < /body> where it says "hello" save it and reopen the web page and you'll see the changes.

Let me know how you get on. :D

Ah great Zirco. What I do is keep both windows open side by side. Edit what I want in Notepad, save it and then refresh the web page.
Where it says hello between the body tags you should be able to type anything. A handy tip too is to tap F5 on the keyboard to reload any web page any time. ;)

Ok, I think I've got it. This works......
I have to edit/save the txt file as .txt then save again as .html. Then refresh the html page and the html page then reflects the txt file. :?: :D

Once you save the txt file the web page is automatically saved, and yep just refresh it. Hope you're enjoying it. :D

Hi Strum, em......if I only edit/save the txt file nothing changes in the webpage.....there is no auto save of the webpage.
So I have to also save the html file .....only then does the webpage change when I refresh. :roll: :D

Zircon, it's fantastic that you are taking such an interest being a webmaster. it inspires me to return to now. I don't want jump on Strums gig, but there are some very good web programs available. Just Google them. That way they may be installed, and then you can make the templates and fill your details at will.
I hope Strum doesn't mind me stepping in here.
keep up the good work and in no time you will ha websites for you various cubs and interests.
Good luck. wuu wuu wuu wuu

Not in the least Bugs. There are plenty of sites to build sites from but it's still good to know the basic coding. ;)

I'll make a screen-shot of what I do Zirco. ;)

EDIT: Hope this makes sense...

You're very welcome Zirco, don't know about great tutor though, I think I tend to make it sound more difficult than it is. I've always had a fascination about how things work and when I made my first page I was hooked like I said. Cheers. ;)
