Love that black and white shot of the Knox Hall on the Portal. Would you believe I was never inside it !We always felt you had to be CofI to use it but, now that there is very little religion around I'm sure that no longer pertains.

I was never in there either Rocker but it's open for many occasions, talks, musical recitals, fairs, things like that. What's Cofl ?

Today's portal pic The Waverly, which I've never heard of before, what a Boat.
Did you ever see cruises out of D/L? It must have been from mid 70's to - ? if bookings were from Falcon travel in the S/C?

Gosh Strum, I don't remember that paddle steamer Waverly being in Dún Laoghaire but in the 70's I was rarely at home and wasn't in touch with what was happening.

1. Awful gates - whatever about being unable to preserve original gates, whoever came up with that 'cheap' design
2. un-weeded entrance - a regular blight in Dun Laoghaire public places.

The original gates were completely different Michael. There was a single gate with steps up to it leading to a path around the changing rooms/pavilion, and next to that a wide single gate, I'm guessing for the Sheep way back? They were more to the left of the photo.
Also the four pillars are new, I'm guessing copied from the Crostwaite Pk original entrance? All in all I think it looks well because the gates are the same as the railings.

I think it's just an Artists impression/blueprint? The Hill isn't flat enough to accommodate that fortification around it. I'm just guessing though, there could have been a wall round it when it was first erected.

Maybe it was to keep out those pesky Goats.

Have to say I have a sneaking regard for Noel V.In the late 60's I started working in Irish Tourism and spent the best 20 years of my life in the business. I met remarkable people throughout the country who worked tirelessly for the industry. In the wintertime we had to accompany travel agents around the country and take them to "Irish " events. The late Hal Roach at Jurys then Tony Kenny at Jurys, the Abbey Tavern, the Great Southern in Killarney. I saw some slick, professional world class performances. The Burlington started their cabaret and we went along , just a group of Irish friends....Noel V burst on the scene and we laughed ourselves silly from start to finish. It was a lot more double entrndre than other shows and more raucous but some how or another he hit the spot. He had the graciousness at the end of the night to seek out our table and thank us for the support and laughter which made him perform even better. Over the years I met him at races in Leopardstown and other events and he was always the humble man...totally likeable.

Like others have said ..... I am amazed at the amount of hits our posts get compared to the few who bother posting. Either there are a lot of very nosey politicians checking us out or we are a nation of voyuers ?

What about a thumbs up button if you like a post but cant be bothered responding ?

Bottom line is that 100s of views occur on certain posts and yet the number of contributing posters is barely over a dozen..... the ratio tells me that something is wrong and that the site is possibly being monitored. I wonder is it worth making the posts visable only to registered members, at least that way we have an idea who is onboard. Lets not forget, we donate to keep it going and as such should have some explaination regarding those who like to read and not type. Any lurkers out there care to tell us why you dont join in ?
